One of the oldest cities of the Sultanate, this was once a center of education and art. Visit the Nizwa fort, completed in the 1650s, was the seat of power during the rule of the Al Ya ruba dynasty. Nizwa fort was built in the 1668 A.D by Imam Sultan Bin Saif Al Ya’rubi. It is Oman’s most visited national monument. The fort was the administrative seat of authority for the presiding Imams and Walis in times of peace and conflict. The main bulk of the fort took about 12 years to complete and was built above an underground stream. The fort is a reminder of the town’s significance through turbulent periods in Oman’s long history. It was a formidable stronghold against raiding forces that desired Nizwa’s abundant natural wealth and its strategic location at the crossroads of vital routes. Further on you visit the Nizwa souq which showcases a wonderful array of handicrafts – coffee pots, swords, leather goods, silverware, antiques, and household utensils.

You proceed to Birkat al Mouz, which means village of bananas, and is a quiet oasis village nestled on the foothills of the Jebal Akhdar Mountains, with date palm plantations and an abandoned village. The abandoned village lies on a foothill and is made up of deserted mud houses and a falaj system, an ingenious water channel system used to transport water from aquifers in the mountains to the homes of the people. The falaj is also abandoned. You now turn towards Jabal Akdhar, which means “Green Mountains” in Arabic. . The climate is moderate year round as the mean altitude is about 1800 metres. Post breakfast check out from the hotel you start your journey towards Muscat. Your first stop is at the picturesque town of Nakhl, which means date palms. As you enter Nakhl, standing as a sentinel is Nakhl Fort, one of the most imposing of Oman s many forts. Believed to have been built on pre Islamic foundations and partially renovated by Imam Said bin Sultan in 1834, the Fort stands on a rocky prominence 200 meters above the plains, providing commanding views of the Batinah plains around. The Fort has many features; gaps for scalding date honey to be poured through to offset intruders, a falaj to sustain the inmates during attacks, spiked wooden and metal inlaid doors to thwart enemy intrusion, but the most defining feature that sets the Fort apart from other forts is perhaps the Majlis, a seating area on the uppermost level, perhaps used as a resting place. Couple of kilometers away is the Ain Al Thowra Hot Springs, which flows out of a wadi and disappears into the nearby date plantations through a falaj channel.
